However, few designers have embraced letterpress --wood type in particular-- as a technique applied with Arabic typography. This presents an opportunity to research the imperfection that results from attempting to break apart the Arabic script into physical components resulting in a rejuvenated visual form. This thesis explores the behavior of Arabic letterforms as a process but also engages Arabic typography as a visual element in this procedure. Mohamed Archive https://archive.rehammohamed.com/PROCESS //process [1] ARABIC WOOD TYPE The process of creating the work went from choosing the typefaces based on the different arabic scripts and then modifiing the connections of some of the typefaces. Then digital files were created to prepare the files for carving using the cnc. The wood was first prepared and planed to type high and then carved on, lastly cutting and finishing in the woodshop. [2] PROOF PRINTING PRESS The press was designed to be a proof press, the design is modified for a simpler version of a press as a DIY kit. most of the process working on this press was getting the measurments and sketching the parts and figuring out the mechanism. the press parts were produced using the cnc for some flat and 3D parts. it was then assembled using wood glue and stainless steel bolts and nuts.[3] PRINTS The prints were printed using the produced wood type. the inks used were letterpress florecent inks. the design of the prints was focusing on the form of the characters script: Naskh, Thuluth, Ruq’ah, Kufic, Maghribi and Geometric/Pixels, in different positions [initial,medial,final]. The woodtype tries different forms from adapting the block to the shape of the letter, working with smaller point size to trying the dynamics of working with ligatures and without. <img width="6000" tactile imperfection of its visual quality. However, few designers have embraced letterpress --wood type in particular-- as a technique applied with Arabic typography. This presents an opportunity to research the imperfection that results from attempting to break apart the Arabic script into physical components resulting in a rejuvenated visual form. This thesis explores the behavior of Arabic letterforms as a process but also engages Arabic typography as a visual element in this procedure. The items are remixed and collaged with an arabic lettering piece that says حبوبة يا ست البنات which translates to “my grandmother the best of the ladies”. The concept behind this scarf is to be always wrapped by my grandmother, her warmth and her kindness.
